Kids Wetsuits 101: How To Pick The Perfect Fit For Maximum Fun & Protection!

If your little ones spend more time in the waves than on the sand, getting them the right wetsuit is a total game-changer. It keeps them warm, helps prevent sunburn and makes those epic beach days last even longer. But with so many options out there, it can be tricky knowing what to look for. Let’s dive into what really matters when picking out the perfect kids' wetsuit for summer.

1. Fit comes first

A wetsuit that fits well means better insulation, enhanced comfort and easier movement in the water. Look for a snug (but not tight!) fit around the neck, wrists and thighs — this helps keep water out. If it sags or wrinkles, it’s too big. If it looks like a struggle to zip up, simply size up.

We generally recommend picking the smaller size for their age for a comfortable fit. For example, if your child is 2–3 years old, you would buy a size 1-2 — unless your child is bigger for their age, then you would buy a size 2-3. You can also cross-check what size they wear in clothing. We suggest going off of bottoms, such as pants and shorts, as they better reflect your child’s size in swimwear.

If you’re still unsure what size to get, feel free to check our size chart or get in touch with us at hello@summersunlabel. You can also message us on Instagram for a quick size consult. And if you don't feel the size is right once you’ve received your wetsuit, reach out to us, and we can arrange to exchange the size.

2. Check the thickness

Wetsuit thickness is measured in millimetres (like 1.5mm or 2mm). For warmer weather and summer surf, a 1.5mm or 2mm kids’ wetsuit is ideal. Thicker suits offer more warmth but can be restrictive, so only go there if your mini surfer is paddling out in cooler water or hitting the waves on windy, overcast days.

3. Prioritise flexibility

Kids play hard, and wetsuits should keep up. Look for wetsuits made with flexible foam or rubber that let your child move without restriction. Flatlock stitching (where the panels are stitched together edge-to-edge) is also great for warmer water and gives better movement.

4. Go for easy zips

Back zips are a great choice for kids’ wetsuits. They’re easy to use, and, unlike front zips, they sit out of reach, so there’s less chance of fiddling mid-swim. They also tend to offer a smoother fit across the chest, which helps with comfort whenever they hit the water. Our zip designs also conform to each size, with our 0–1 wetsuits having smaller zips than the other sizes.

5. Pick a style they’ll love

Wetsuits aren’t just about function; they should feel fun to wear, too! Choose colours and designs that get your little one excited to jump in. Whether they’re into bright pops or low-key tones, the right look can turn a wetsuit into their new favourite beach outfit.
